Images of wealth and prosperity,
Dutch painting in the 17th century
omschrijving The 17th century in the Netherlands was a period of prosperity and wealth, a true Golden Age. Holland had finally freed itself from the oppression of the Spanish king. The newly won freedom gave the country an enormous boost of selfconfidence. The vessels of the Dutch East India Company reached the shores of India, Ceylon, China and Indonesia and came back laden with goods like spices, silks and porcelain.
Rich merchants in cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem and Delft had their portraits painted by talented artists like Frans Hals and Rembrandt. Genre scenes, still lifes, and scenes from everyday life were highly appreciated.
The lectures will give you a first idea of this very interesting period.
