Cursus Engels gevorderden (B1.3-B2.0)

Cursuscode: 6255

This English Intermediate Course 4 (B1.3-B2.0) is taught in English and open to students of all nationalities.
Follows on from: English Intermediate 3 (B1.2-B1.3) given last autumn

This course is for you if…
•    You already understand the difference between ‘I work’ and ‘I am working’, and between ‘I worked…’ and ‘I was working’ and can use these structures quite confidently;
•    You can talk about what might happen in the future, and ‘what if…?’
•    You want to master more formal language, such as ‘This article was written by ….’;
•    You want to learn more about how and when to use verbs like must, have to, need to and should;
•    You want to be able to talk about hypothetical situations, such as ‘If I were rich, I would travel the world’ and ‘If I had known that, I would have made a totally different decision’.

Of course you won’t only be talking about all of these things, but also writing, reading and listening, and doing some extra practice at home (about two hours each week). The material we use is based on TED talks: real-life communication about interesting events and ideas which people want to share with others. The grammar and vocabulary fit well with the topics in the talks.

Please buy the course book before the first lesson. We will work through units 10-12 on this course.

J.C. (Janneke) Dijkstra
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Janneke Dijkstra has been teaching English for over thirty years – and is still enjoying it. She has taught at schools, in institutes and in corporate life, the latter of which also abroad. She enjoys: – passing on knowledge to others; – offering a safe platform for learning, experimenting and playing with the English language; – making people enjoy learning this language – even while making mistakes; – working with people from various backgrounds, nationalities and of various ages – and letting them work together; – making people realize that many mistakes originate from their mother tongues – and that they are therefore not unique in them; – teaching people a proper pronunciation – while bearing in mind that in our global world other accents are becoming more and more commonplace; – explaining the rules of the English grammar in a way that students understand and are able to apply them; – the fact that all of the above come together at Volksuniversiteit Amsterdam!
